Our Beaches are very fragile, the area from the dunes to the sand banks past where the wave breaks are constantly changed due to mostly natural occurring events. The wind and sea relentlessly mould the coastline taking sand from here and putting it there. River mouths change their course and huge tides erode our beautiful beaches. Most sand is returned, though some seemingly irreparable damage has become evident along our coastline and also our river systems.

What can we do? Should we just let nature take its course or should we build rock walls or artificial reefs protecting our beautiful and most favoured places? Much debate has taken place in recent times with government and local councils putting a lot of time and money into finding an adequate remedy for endangered places.

If you find yourself at a beach affected by erosion, take care and heed the signs. Running up and down the dunes or sliding down them on a boogie board can be fun, but unfortunately all the attention will loosen the sand and on the next high tide it will freely be carried away. Most erosion is temporary with the sands returning as the weather and currents change. If you visit a beach labelled as unsafe its best to travel to the next beach, which in all probability has received all the sand. The beach is usually 1 or 2 km away and in perfect condition. Check with lifeguards or locals for useful information if in doubt of a beaches condition.
